Dareman? BatDevil? Bad Idea?

So this week I’ve decided to try to write in this thing more.  It’s been the better part of a year since my last post so naturally I’m a huge slacker.  Ok…maybe slacker is the wrong word…being the father of  2 small kids, working full time and with a side business of my own leaves little time to sit in front of a computer and write.  Well I’m going to try harder to post more often. 

The other problem that I was faced with after deciding to write again was topic.  Sure, there was lots of stuff I could write about from this past summer, new Iron Man, new Superman, convention musings, etc.  But I wanted something fresh and current, so I was at a loss.  Then yesterday it hit me, in the form of a headline I saw while CP24 played in the background…”Ben Affleck to play Batman in Man of Steel Sequel” 

Pardon?  Can this be true?  The man who help destroy Daredevil (because let’s face it, between Affleck, Garner, and Farrell that movie was an abortion) is really going to be taking over for Christian Bale as the Dark Knight.  Ok...so he’s an Academy Award winner (But not for acting) and he’s a good looking fella.  And, according to Joss Wheadon he’s got the “chin”

  

I was just talking about this very thing with my wife not 2 days before the announcement was made.  At the time we were watching True Blood and in particular a scene involving Sookie and Alcide Herveaux played by Joe Manganiello.  We discussed how we thought he’d be a great Batman.  He’s got the voice, physique, and yes…chin that would work for both Bruce Wayne and batman.  I mean the man was runner up to Henry Cavill in Man of Steel so to me he seems like an obvious choice.  For a new Batman I think you have to walk the line between super well known actor and unknown actor so Joe just works.  That’s why I think the last couple of choices that worked (Michael Keaton, Christian Bale) worked and the couple that, in my opinion, didn’t work (George Clooney, Val Kilmer)

Another actor I heard as a possible contender to fill the shoes was Josh Brolin.  Again…famous enough but not too famous.  He has enough of a dark, brooding personality, the good looks, voice, and, yes even the chin.  Also, if this movie is supposed to take place many years after The Dark Knight Rises, then a slightly older/middle aged Batman would be in order.  For this Brolin would have been awesome in the role I think.  But Ben Affleck, Ben Affleck?? Ugh…I just don’t know.

However, In the end, when all is said and done…

Disney Acquires Lucasfilm!!!  New Star Wars Movie by 2015.

An exciting new future featuring the continuation of the Star Wars movie saga was announced on October 30, as the Walt Disney Company enters an agreement to acquire Lucasfilm Ltd. from George Lucas. Backed by the global reach and brand stewardship strengths of Disney, the future of Star Wars is now under the direction of acclaimed film producer and studio executive Kathleen Kennedy, co-chairman of Lucasfilm. Kennedy and Disney plan a slate of new Star Wars feature films, beginning with the long-awaited Star Wars: Episode VII, targeted for release in 2015, followed by Episodes VIII and IX. Additional feature films are expected to continue the saga and grow the franchise well into the future.

"For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next," said George Lucas. "It's now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I've always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime. I'm confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come. Disney's strength gives Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products."

The acquisition has Lucasfilm and its creative works and operations enter into Disney's global portfolio of world-class brands that include Pixar and Marvel. "Lucasfilm reflects the extraordinary passion, vision, and storytelling of its founder, George Lucas," said Robert A. Iger, chairman and chief executive officer of The Walt Disney Company. "This transaction combines a world-class portfolio of content including Star Wars, one of the greatest family entertainment franchises of all time, with Disney's unique and unparalleled ability to leverage creativity across multiple platforms, businesses, and markets to generate sustained growth and drive significant long-term value."

Kathleen Kennedy, current co-chairman of Lucasfilm, will become president of Lucasfilm, reporting to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn. Additionally she will serve as the brand manager for Star Wars, working directly with Disney's global lines of business to build, further integrate, and maximize the value of this global franchise. Kennedy will serve as executive producer on new Star Wars feature films, with George Lucas serving as creative consultant.

The acquisition combines two highly compatible family entertainment brands, and strengthens the long-standing beneficial relationship between them that includes successful integration of Star Wars content into Disney theme parks in Anaheim, Orlando, Paris and Tokyo.

Under the deal, Disney will acquire ownership of Lucasfilm, a leader in entertainment, innovation and technology, and its operating businesses in live action film production, consumer products, videogames, animation, visual effects, and audio postproduction. Disney will also acquire the substantial portfolio of cutting-edge entertainment technologies that have kept audiences enthralled for many years. The present intent is for Lucasfilm employees to remain in their current locations.

The acquisition has been agreed upon by the board of directors of both companies, and is undergoing customary regulatory review and should be complete in the next few months. For further developments on the continuation of the Star Wars saga, including Episode VII, continue checking StarWars.com.

I've eaten a little crow on this blog in the past so I'm reserving judgement.  Lets just say this Star Wars Geek is cautiously optimistic.
