Random Thought # 5

I hate when people walk with their arms crossed, but especially women.  It makes you look unapproachable and bitter.

This and that

Had a really great day today. I went to Newmarket with the family to visit my mom, while there I ran into a friend of mine that I haven't seen literally in 10 years or more. What a small world, but it was fun to see her. I also bought new hiking boots at MEC so I can go out hiking with my little sweetie and my wife. Next purchase will be a baby carrier for her so I should start dropping the pounds soon hahaha. I've also bought a membership through WagJag.com to a crossfit gym..as soon as my shoulder is better.

The Avengers Are Coming...Soon

Ok..I'm excited,

Was just reading an article online HERE about Thor Actor Chris Hemsworth's diet and workout regime to prepare for Thor. The tail end of this article is what kind of perked my ears up and made me sqirm in my seat.

"Thor" hits theaters in just weeks, but there will be no rest in Chris' Norse god diet.

"We start shooting ['The Avengers'] in a couple of months," he told Access .

"The Avengers," due out in 2012, will unite Marvel's greatest heroes including, Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America and Mark Ruffalo as the Incredible Hulk.

Since Thor comes out in May, a bit before my 35th birthday it will most likely be my birthday present to myself, but the Avengers?  How could I not be excited for this.  To finally see all these super heros in one movie side by side after all of the post-credit tie ins and hints is pure Geek-Spanish-Fly.  After all the shenanigans I read about Edward Norton's ultra control issues, I'm stoked for Ruffalo playing Banner/Hulk

Here's the Latest Thor Trailer for your viewing pleasure

Geeky Me

This is a conversation I had with my wife the other day...Yes...this happens

Geeky Dad: Who ya annoyed at?

Geeky Dad's Wife: Staff

GD: Who specifically?

GD: Or is there literally a staff in your store. You know like a wizard?

GDW: Lmao

Above all else...I am a Dad!!!

I realized recently that I have done a lot more that's "geeky" and not as much that's "Dad" ...well here you go.

Today my little girl was playing by herself, when she stopped suddenly and noticed I was watching her. She came toddling over to me, put her hand on my leg and smiled at me. At that moment I knew why I had become a father....then she looked in my eyes....

..and dropped the biggest, smelliest deuce ever

The Bionic Tortoise

"We can rebuild him. We have the technology. We can make him better than he was. Better...stronger...faster"

Take one beloved pet tortoise, add a couple of wheels usually reserved for office furniture and presto..you got the worlds first bionic turtle (NANANANANANA)  When I read this story I was in hysterics.

According to the article in the Toronto Star today;

"Originally the adult tortoise’s owner had brought the animal into the hospital in hopes that doctors could heal an infected leg wound. The tortoise had damaged its left leg on an electrical fence that had fallen down in the garden where it lives

The team, however, had no choice but to amputate the tortoise’s entire leg after determining the infection posed a risk to the tortoise’s entire well-being.
But while animals such as dogs and cats can manage on three legs, things aren’t as easy for a tortoise with its heavy shell and sluggish movement.
The hospital’s wildlife expert, Cláudio Yudi Kanayama, came up with the next best thing: a wheel similar to a furniture caster. The doctor and his team glued a plastic shield onto the tortoise’s carapace (underside) before affixing a wheel to it.A second wheel was added a few weeks later in a follow-up appointment to give the tortoise even more balance."

They say truth is stranger than fiction..and this is definitely the case here. I wonder what kind of life span this turtle can expect now he's on wheels?  I guess it really depends how closely he follows his maintenance schedule.  Make sure his bearings are well lubricated, wheels rotated...do they even make a hoist for a turtle?

What's next...a bionic dog that can dry-hump your leg at 60mph?, a bird with a 100 decibel squawk?... a cat that can ignore you faster than a speeding bullet?

Judging by these pictures...

THE FUTURE IN PET PROSTHESES HAS ARRIVED!
I hear a squeak...where's the nearest Mr Lube

Toronto Comic-Con 2011...AWESOME!!!

"I am NOT the Droid you're looking for"
Hello fellow geeks.  I am writing you now just a little geekier, a little happier and a little more tired.

My family and I just got back from our first comic-con in Toronto.  What a cool event.  My wife and I had a great time.  My little princess may have been a little young to appreciate the entire thing, but she was relatively content most of the time so no complainants.

60th Post - Upping my Geek Quotient

My Future office...Nice Eh?
Hey!!. This is my 60th...yes 60TH blog post. Who'd a thunk that I would be still writing in this thing after all this time.  That being said...

What have I gotten myself into?

Ok, so this whole "Geeky Dad" thing has inspired me to take a next step to secure my own little corner of the interweb.  In order to make this dream a reality, I have decided to make my own webpage and merge my Blog with my photography, Twitter, everything in one online place.  In order to do this I need a new website for www.geekydadsden.com that's not just a blog site.  Unfortunately its not in the budget to spend hundreds of dollars to have someone else do it for me.  So to keep expenses to a minimum, I am endeavoring to learn how to create my own website.  I'm going to learn HTML, CSS and all the other stuff associated that I haven't even begun to read about yet.  I'm not trying to become a master or make a living doing this, far from it.  I'm just looking to learn enough that my newly created website functions properly, does what I want it to do, and doesn't look like ass.  Luckily I have already been using photoshop for some time now with my whole love of photography so graphics and photos shouldn't be a problem. I would also like to think that some of those college courses are still resting, hung-over in my brain still, enough so that some of the stuff about esthetics and what makes something look good are still there.  So I got my first book "For Dummies" to get me started (from the library, again since I'm looking to keep expenses minimal) and we'll see how it goes.  All I can do at this point is do my research, pick programmer friends' brains and try my best....

Ok...

I'm going there;

"No...Try not....DO........or do not....there is no try" - Yoda

Ya..taking my geekyness to a whole other level was a great idea...yikes.

Earth: The New Tattooine?

The Earth with 2 Suns??  I can see the brooding Moisture Farm-boys now (“but I was going into Toshi Station to pick up some power converters”)

In all seriousness, this has got to be one of the freakiest/weirdest stories I’ve happened upon.

According to scientists, one of the brightest stars in the Orion constellation is due to explode.  The Red Supergiant, meaning it’s at the end of it’s life, could explode as soon as within the next few months.  The ensuing supernova could  be so bright that night would become day for a couple of weeks according to “experts”.

What is less certain to these “experts” is exactly when this will happen.  While they say it’s possible that it could happen within the year, they also say that it could also happen within the next million years...talk about  your wide open timeline. Sheesh.  Check out the story I read here.

...sounds like the kind of window a furniture delivery or cable company gives you for a service appointment doesn’t it?

The other thing that kind of makes me smile about this story is that the star that’s due to go “blewey”..it’s designation is “Betelgeuse”...You know..like the movie “Beetlejuice”  So basically, when this thing goes up......

IT’S SHOWTIME!!!

So Much Geeky Goodness!!

Hello Geeky Dad Peons

The last couple of weeks has been a plethora of geeky goodness and I decided to put a bunch of stuff in one post, so this may seem a bit rambley but I don't seem to have the time to blog quite as regularly as I used to so this is what you get :)

First and most recent...I'M GOING TO TORONTO COMIC CON :)
I know it may seem strange to my readers, but I have never been to one of these things before and I am so friggin stoked!!.  My wife is even coming with me and we're also going to take my one year old.  We hit Old Navy the other day and picked out a suitable t-shirt for both of them.  My little sweetie is going to look so cute in her "Ewok" T-Shirt, and hopefully we can get a picture of her with one of the many Star Wars related guests the Con is going to have.  Fingers Crossed for Billy Dee :)

Superbowl has come and gone and with it the premier of the really neat-o commercials that it brings (if you're in the US that is..here in Canada you have to search for them online, super lame, Thanks a lot CRTC) Anyway, one of these commercials that actually showed here in the Great White North was a trailer for the upcoming Captain America: The First Avenger.  Check it out

Now I was never really a huge fan of the story or the comic books growing up but this movie looks pretty excellent.

Another trailer that came out recently was X-men:First Class

I really really want this movie to be good.  I'm so scared they're going to ruin the whole thing but time will tell. The trailer looks good so my hopes are high.

Couple of final things...First...I want to officially say that the post I was totally against the ipad I was totally wrong.  It's the coolest gadget I have ever owned.  Unfortunately I have to fight my wife to use it which is no easy task. But I have got my hands on it a bit and Me likey and I'm totally addicted to Angry Birds.

I think that's enough rambling.

I May End Up Eating my words

Some time ago I posted a blog about the then newly released iPad HERE.  If you're too lazy to read the whole post, Readers Digest version is this...in the post I basically talked about how useless I thought the whole thing was and how I would never ever ever own one.

Well I May end up eating my words

Yesterday I went to Future Shop to pick up a couple of things with my little girl and ended up looking around the store..just browsing as I told the many sales people who were stalking me.  As a side note, I hate that, just once I'd like to marvel over the latest gadget without some pimply faced university student harassing me to buy something.  But I digress.  So in my wandering I find a display with the iPads out to look at and play with.  Initially I rolled my eyes and fully intended on walking right past, but something in me drew me to that table.  Maybe it was the pretty display, more likely it was my gadget-loving instincts that pulled me to the table like an injured animal looks for water.  So I picked the thing up...and, Oh, My, God.  It was a pretty neat thing to play with.  I navigated through pictures and couldn't help but think how great this thing would make my own photography look.  I had a gander at a movie or two and they looked very good.  Bottom line after my short stint playing with it

ME WANT

I haven't bought one yet so I have yet to truly eat my words, but I imagine it will happen
